44 - ZA WARUDO, Part 2 - Played College Ball, Ya Know

<= Previous | Top | =To Be Continued=>

Last time, we finally met Dio face-to-face, immediately ran away, and immediately started running back. This time, we're going to keep running away.

Jotaro and Polnareff go off on their own, while Cascada sticks with Joseph and Kakyoin.

The Egyptian pound was actually worth a bit more than the US dollar in early 1989; $1 would net you about 89-90 piastre. However, we've seen Joseph throwing around British pounds so far, which would've exchanged at £1 to about E£1.58. A big ol' wad of £50 notes (only Scotland and Ireland use £100 notes), so say, £5000-ish, could totally cover the cost of an old truck at the time.

I researched this for a solid 30 minutes or so but turns out it's hard to find Egyptian car prices in the 1980s on short notice!

Dio was born in the late 1860s, making this... pretty much true! Prototypes existed, but "proper" automobiles were still in development. There might have been a few steam-powered oddities.

Dio sits in the backseat right next to this guy.

Dio: Shut up, hop in the front seat, and start driving...
wilson.png Senator Wilson Phillips: Gweaaaauuuggh!? Owwiiiieee! Who... who the hell do you think you are!? You think I'm gonna let you get away with this!?

I don't know what a US senator would be doing in Cairo in 1989. What I do know is that in the 1993 OVA he was voiced by Charles Martinet, the long-time (now former) voice of Super Mario and also Dracula that one time.

More official translations have him say he "pays 50 times more taxes than the average Joe" which I suppose would already make him one of the less crooked politicians. Meanwhile, 1000 acres is about 1.56 square miles or ~2000 square meters.

Dio: (Filthy Yanks never change...)
wilson.png Senator Wilson Phillips: Nnngyaaaaaaaaa!! (W... what's this kid's deal!? I'm gonna die! If I don't make a break for it, I'm gonna diiiiiie!)

Fun fact: Satoshi Kon's handling of this scene in the 1993 OVA caught legendary anime producer Masao Maruyama's eye and nailed him the job directing Perfect Blue. I'm serious.

Dio: Follow that truck. If you don't catch up to it, I'll kill you.
wilson.png Senator Wilson Phillips: Y-yessir!! (Why am I still inside!? Whyyy!? I-I get it! It's 'cause I'm a senator! There's nothing a senator can't do! Wahahaha!)

Meanwhile...

Joseph: He's chasing after us! I know it!
Kakyoin: Does Dio know exactly where you are?
Joseph: No... he may have the body of my grandfather, Jonathan Joestar... Strange as it may sound, that body is broadcasting his presence... I can tell that he's close, but that's it... I could tell Dio was in Cairo, but I couldn't figure out where he was hiding out... It's the same principle...
Kakyoin: ......
Joseph: He can sense us... Rather, he can sense that a Joestar is nearby. He can't distinguish me from Jotaro. He probably hasn't even realized we split up yet...
Cascada: Are you sure about any of that or just guessing?
Joseph: I didn't get attacked by piranhas and an octopus while flying a biplane during the War to take lip from you, kid.
Kakyoin: ?? How??
Cascada: Then if Jotaro ambushed him, we could throw him off his game, maybe...
Joseph: We can only hope so...
Kakyoin: I'm going to need an explanation...
Joseph: No time! Dio's right behind us!!

Okay, so, Wilson Phillips spends enough time in Cairo that he's familiar with its rush hour? What is he doing here??

wilson.png Senator Wilson Phillips: You... you say, "go", but it's impossible...
Dio: The sidewalk's pretty roomy, isn't it? Now go.
wilson.png Senator Wilson Phillips: T-the sidewalk!? But it's full of people coming home from work!

We've established Senator Wilson Phillips is one of the less crooked politicians. Would he mow down a crowd of Arabs just because an elderly Brit told him to?

wilson.png Senator Wilson Phillips: ......I... I-I-I... I refuse!
Dio: ......What?

I... I guess he has dual citizenship with Egypt? He couldn't join Egypt's parliament but you can still become a USA senator as long as you've lived in there for nine years. And if he's aiming for president that means he was born in the USA. I'm amazed this dude got elected at the same time as George Bush.

You can only get this joke fight if you have over 40 cumulative FP with the party. Holy shit look at that SP total though, goddamn. Wilson Phillips has some mental fortitude.

Rather than "Stand", he has a "Tactics" menu.

Push It To The Limit is a move that almost every character (Quicksilver doesn't, for example) learns at level 50. It's a powerful buff to every stat.

The only path to victory is to use Push It To the Limit until everything is maxed out, and then possibly use Cheat Engine to lock your HP because you still can just get hit too hard and die even with boosted Durability.

The "Shout Name" ability is obviously unique to Senator Wilson Phillips.

Your only other release valve is that Dio is susceptible to a few status effects that make him lose his turn or that cause percentage damage over time.

It ain't easy, but we need to teach this self-important shit a lesson.

If you get frozen in ice and then Dio uses his Stand's special ability to breathe fire, it's a one-hit KO.

Wilson does magically get access to Cascada's inventory, so might as well make use of it. I probably should have used the nuke, but that's hindsight for ya.

If you somehow survive 100 turns, a special event occurs...

Not that.

This is the battle cry for Jonathan Joestar's signature attack, the Sunlight Yellow Overdrive.

wilson.png Senator Wilson Phillips: Don't fuck with this senator!

Steel: Cascada and the rest of the team never learned the truth. Deeming the investigation of Dio's sudden disappearance as "sounds boring", they enjoyed their remaining vacation in Cairo before living the rest of their lives in peace.

Writing assignment:
State of the world in 2025 if Wilson Phillips got elected to the US presidency in 1988, preventing the Gulf War.

See you again!
