34 - Shopping Trip

Last time, we beat up a sentient sword. This time, we visit the game's penultimate hub map (yes, really).

This is our reward for defeating Twin Blades Polnareff fair and square. He automatically learns the "Zantetsuken" attack, which pierces defense and has a chance to instantly KO an enemy.
You may recognize the phrase "Zantetsuken" - translated as "Iron-Cutting Sword" - from pop culture. It recurs in the Final Fantasy series as Odin's special move (which also has 1HKO properties) and is the name of Ishikawa Goemon XIII's sword in Lupin III.

We're pretty much looking golden on the FP front, though Iggy could use another bump.

The real Edfu is probably best known for its particularly well-preserved temple dedicated to Horus. The game Edfu is a small map containing a big marketplace and pretty much nothing else.

This section right outside the hotel has all the food vendors, though there's nothing we haven't seen in past updates.

Quicksilver is the only player Stand that can actually do anything with Scrap Metal, so I buy quite a few pieces here. We always need more SP restoratives.

New to Edfu are the penultimate Element of Freedom wisps. We're overleveled enough to blast them down fast, but if they decide to spam their paralyzing thunder attack then shit can go south real quick.

Alas, none of the new equipment really beats out our bulletproof vest.

This shop is extremely important if you decided to opt in to being sickly way back at the start of the game. It's not easy to come by Cold Medicine.

Jotaro steals back your money along with swiping ten (10) cans of Diamond C. Ordinarily I'm all for screwing over scammers, but we've already discussed how it's kind of an issue how JoJo treats everyone outside of Japan like they're crooks.

My spider sense tingled a bit here because normally an NPC saying something like would imply the ankh pendant is particularly good armor for an upcoming boss or something, but it's not.

Cascada had to wear a chador for a few cutscenes back in Saudi Arabia, if folks recall.

Text box gaffe spotted! Joseph ain't even here!
Shawarma descends from the alleged "hamburger of the Middle East" doner kebab, made by stacking a bunch of thin slices of meat on a vertical spit and shaving off the outer layer as it cooks. They mentioned it once in some Marvel movie, I think? Lebanese immigrants brought the concept to Mexico in the early 1900s, eventually leading to tacos al pastor being the go-to taqueria offering in modern day Los Angeles.

This is the same vendor that was in Kom Ombo. Over twice the price for another 5% effectiveness isn't exactly cost effective, but it can make the difference.

One vendor here sells fake versions of the permanent stat up items. They don't really do anything on the map, but in battle they serve as buffs for each respective stat, so there are actually a few use cases.

Polnareff's event is nice and quick with the merchant in the corner.

Polnareff under 10 FP by the time we leave Edfu is all we need. I don't think he has any other opportunities so we're in the clear, but I load a save juuust in case.

I finally manage to get footage of the proper combo attack between Quicksilver and Magician's Red. I still don't know what went wrong last time.

This is a cameo of Johnny Joestar of Part 7, aka Steel Ball Run. He's a paraplegic who competes in a cross-country horse race and fights to the death against the President of the United States.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time looking for this guy, assuming that surely I'd spoken to this one NPC and he wasn't the event trigger. According to the footage I just walked directly past him like thirty times.

This is another event akin to the one in Kom Ombo that just establishes Abdul has a life outside of the Stardust Crusaders. However, if one were so inclined to read too much into things, Aisha is the name of a character from Romancing SaGa and Khalid is the name of a character from Romancing SaGa 3. But their sprites bear no resemblance whilst Gallahad was a very obvious homage.

After we have this conversation, we can walk to the other side of the map, and...

Talking to Khalid nets Abdul 1 FP, and Aisha an additional 2 FP.

Aisha only appears if your day count is between 30 and 36, which is pretty normal if you're playing at a reasonable pace. I, a sicko optimizer, had actually never seen this before. I had to sleep at the hotel a whole bunch to get the footage then loaded a save afterwards. Sorry, Abdul.

Iggy's at 9 FP, so our first priority is to push him over the 10 threshold.

It's perhaps a bit counter-intuitive, but scolding Iggy here gets the highest FP increase because he was trying to get a rise out of you and you're playing along.

10 FP is where the game considers you "friends", which is important for Iggy in particular. If we switch him out, then talk to him again...

We don't need to bait him with coffee gum anymore!

His skill set expands drastically!!

We can control him directly in battle!!!

The game handles this internally by having two separate party members - designated "Iggy (Mean)" and "Iggy (Nice)" - which is why we had to dismiss and recruit him to get the swap. If you rest at a hotel - which awards EXP to everyone to help them keep up - with Mean Iggy still in your party and his FP over 10, it's possible to see two different Iggys level up simultaneously.
All 18 player Stands are also considered separate "characters". Your chosen portrait and sprites are applied to them afterwards.

And for the last FP event of the day...

He did this in the movie UHF, which I admit I've never seen. I hear neither the sandwich nor the movie are very good.
...Something is absolutely insane to me about a Japanese indie JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fan-game made because of a (self-professed!) autistic housewife's hyperfixation having a direct reference to the Weird Al movie UHF. When they did Spaceballs I just went "haha weird" but this just fucking floors me. What a world.

Of course, when we actually bring Joseph to the shawarma place, we don't get the "Joseph treated you" text. Comical.

There's this shaded alley down in the bottom left corner of the map.

The further in you get...

Your SP drops with every step in this zone... not that you'll notice, because it's only a few steps.

I picture this lady shuffling towards you like if one of the zombies in Deadly Premonition was moving at 10x speed.

Amber's entire strategy is rushing you and blowing herself up in an attempt to oneshot you with insane damage numbers, so the fight would have been about this long regardless. If we slow down her dialogue boxes, here's what we get:
Now get ready to die along wish me this place will become both of our graves as that is Lord Dio's desire...
Lord Dio said he needed me so I will do anything for that man I will even give my life if he wishes it Dio is more beautiful than anyone else how could you ever think of hurting him!?
I will do more for him than that nurse or that granny or that miniskirt lady or anyone ever would I will prove it by sacrificing my blood to him and I won't let you get in my waaaaaaaaaay!!
The nurse is presumably Kate, whom we defeated ages ago, while the granny is surely Enya. We haven't met anyone in a miniskirt, though...

Resting at hotels heals you, distributes a bunch of free EXP to your party members, and might net you a curative or two. Other than that, we've fulfilled a few hidden requirements for some bonuses.

Only one event triggers per night, but we're way ahead of schedule. Back to sleep!

These are both solid M-range, multi-target attacks. My "Star Finger is Jotaro's only M-range attack" statement from 1000 years ago continues to be proven wrong.
Next time, maybe we'll find out more about this mysterious miniskirt figure. See you again!
